Important Safety Information
Oral minoxidil can cause fluid retention, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, ankle swelling, and increased hair growth in unwanted areas. Hair growth affects roughly 1 in 7 patients. It lowers blood pressure; at the much higher doses used for hypertension, the oral form carries an FDA black-box warning for its vasodilatory effects. Cardiovascular history must be reviewed before starting, and blood pressure monitored during. Rare but serious effects, including fluid around the heart, have been linked to dosing errors, a reason dose is set and adjusted by your physician rather than self-managed. Topical formulations may cause scalp irritation, dryness, and increased shedding in the first weeks. Oral use for hair is off-label.
What Minoxidil is.
Minoxidil is used in hair loss care. It widens blood vessels and affects the growth phase of the hair follicle.
The topical form is available over the counter on its own. Here it is compounded with other actives rather than sold alone, and the low-dose oral form is prescription only.

Adherence and scalp tolerance are the usual reasons discussed. Oral carries systemic effects that topical does not, which is why it requires cardiovascular review. Your physician weighs both.
Oral minoxidil is FDA-approved, but not for this use. Prescribing an approved medication outside its labelled indication is legal and common in medicine. It is a decision your physician makes, and one they will explain to you before you start.
